SPIRITUAL SECRETS
THOUGHTS CARRY WEIGHT
Thoughts carry weight. We see that a person drowns when alive, but floats when dead. When man is alive he is heavy because of his thoughts. After death the thoughts are gone and the body floats. Param Sant Pujya Pandit Ji Maharaj used to narrate one of his experiences in this regard. Once he had gone to Bihar in connection with attending Satsang programmes. In Rajgir, there are fountains of warm water where people take bath. Pandit Gangadhar Purohit of Jaipur was accompanying him. He had a heavy body but was lying on the water as if it were a wooden bed. Param Sant Pujya Pandit Ji Maharaj asked him how he could achieve this feat. Pandit Gangadhar ji replied “Pandit ji it is no big deal. You just practice the meditation of our Satsang and become thoughtless. You will also be able to lie down on water like me.” Param Sant Pujya Pandit Ji Maharaj used to say that as soon as he achieved the thoughtless state he also began to float. But as soon as any thought appeared, he began to drown. Therefore, we can become free of all disorders like happiness-sadness, etc., if we are able to achieve the thoughtless state. (From ‘Darshan’, Part-2)
Criticising others—its ill effects
Param Sant Pujya Pandit Ji Maharaj used to say that the biggest sin is to look at vices of others. He used to say that just as bees clear a place of all dirt by eating them away, in the same way the person who criticizes another, purifies that person and takes on himself all the dirt. He also used to say that God never forgives those who see other peoples’ sins. (From ‘Darshan’, Part-2)
Real, True knowledge of this Universe
It is difficult to express true, real knowledge. It is beyond the reach of intellect. It cannot therefore be expressed through words-written or spoken. It can only be felt, experienced. Those who have experienced it say that whatever we had read, heard and understood till now is all baseless and useless. But what lay beyond was not comprehensible. On reaching there, we found ourselves behaving like fools and idiots-unable to comprehend anything. On intellect was utterly useless in helping us comprehend what lay before us. There was neither ‘ONE’ nor ‘TWO’ neither ‘I’ nor ‘YOU’; but a heightened feeling of love and egolessness. Ego was absent, intellect was left far behind and mind was nowhere to be found. There was neither “Gyan” nor “Agyan”, neither one nor two. It was above all such things- whatever it was, it just was. This is all that can be described. (Pujya Gurudev’s words quoted at page 146 in Sompan)
Transferring one’s age to another
It is not impossible to give to someone a part of one’s life-period (total no. of years one is destined to live in human body) and vice versa. I have got such transfers effected through some ‘sadhaks’. There are many procedures for effecting such transfers………… But powerful saints need not undertake such time-taking procedures. They can do this in a fraction of a second only by raising such a desire. Shri Swami Shankaracharya transferred his soul into the body of a dead king by simply desiring. Our Shri Guru Maharaj, out of love for one of his disciples, transferred a substantial part of his life to him at two o clock in the night while walking in his house. Doctors had given up on this disciple and he was almost breathing his last. At that time there was no one with Guru Maharaj, except this servant. Before transferring he sought my views and considering his deep desire for the transfer I expressed my support. Miraculously just at that point of time, the disciple’s condition took a ‘U’, turn and no sign of any disease was to be seen in him. That disciple has left this world only recently. This incident took place around 28 or 29 years back and no one except me knows about it. Possibly that disciple too did not know about it but I am not very sure. (From Sadhana Ke Anubhav)
Transferring one’s pain and suffering to another
Sometimes Shri Guru Maharaj used to suffer from a toothache. It was a nervous pain and sometimes would become unbearable. Once the pain was extremely strong and unbearable. Many disciples were sitting around him. One of them could not bear to see Guru Maharaj in such pain……… He prayed with folded hands…. “I cannot bear to see your pain. Please allow me to take it upon myself.” Guru Maharaj refused permission. He requested again. Guru Maharaj said, “You won’’t be able to bear the pain. But this fellow who was a young, physically well-built and healthy person began to attract the pain. After some time that pain appeared in him and Guru Maharaj was cured. But only in half an hour time our young man started writhing in pain. Guru Maharaj smiled and said, ’I had told you, you won’t be able to bear the pain, Give it back to me.” And Guru Maharaj attracted it back and began to groan in pain once again.
A carbuncle appeared in the back of a Mahatma. It caused him great suffering. The whole back became red and swollen. It had become difficult to urinate or go to the loo. He had lost sleep. His disciples were with him and served him in all possible ways. One of his disciples lived at a far off place. He was informed about his Guru’s serious condition. He came and found the scene unbearable. He prayed, “Please permit me to attract the suffering & pain into myself. I cannot tolerate to see you in such pain….. (The Mahatma refused but the disciple persisted. Ultimately the Mahatma kept quiet)….. He started the process of attraction. In 40 minutes Mahatmaji became well, and an identical carbuncle appeared in the back of the disciple. He died the 4th day. Both of these are true incidents. The way physical impurities can be removed by attraction, similarly, impurities of mind and intellect can also be removed by attraction. This is what Guru does for his disciples. This process is known as ‘tavajjah’ among Sufis. (From Sadhana Ke Anubhav)
Beyond awakened, dream and deep sleep – a fourth state
We exist in three states - awakened state, dream state and state of deep sleep. The sorrow we suffer when awake goes away when we sleep, whether in dreams or in deep sleep. The sorrow that grips us in dream state goes away as soon as we enter deep sleep state or immediately on awakening. But unless we are able to get rid of pain and sorrow even while in awakened state, we cannot get lasting peace. There is one more state above those three states. When we reach that state we experience neither pain nor sorrow despite being afflicted with them. Once Guru Maharaj had a carbuncle, when he was in Eta. A village surgeon who came to treat him, said that the carbuncle needed to be slit open and that it would cause him great pain. So he suggested that some medicine should be prepared (for numbing the area to be operated upon). Injections were not easily available in those days. Guru Maharaj said, “You need not do anything, just go ahead and carry on the operation while I enjoy my hookah. The physician went on with his operation and Guru Maharaj sat enjoying his hookah. Sometimes he would read the newspaper. (From Amritam, page 32)
Foods carry thoughts
During the British Rule, a young man was sentenced to death for one of his acts of patriotism. According to the jail law, he was asked to state his last desire. He expressed the desire to hear the Bhagvad Geeta. His father Shri Anand Swamy offered to recite the verses from Bhagvad Geeta. One day he found his son in a very sullen mood. He was weeping. He thought his son was crying for fear of death. But he replied that he had seen a horrible dream. He saw that he had pierced the heart of his mother with his knife. The father asked him to narrate the events of that day. He replied that everything was the same as other days except the food which was very tasty. It was learnt from the jailor that as the jail cook was on leave, one of the prisoners who was good at cooking was asked to cook. On further query he informed that this prisoner was guilty of having stabbed his mother with a knife. This shows that thoughts enter one’s heart through food. (From Adhyatm aur Vyavahar, page 35)
SOME SECRETS
1. Why are small childrens’ words so sweet and attractive whereas those of grown ups are not? Because the words of children come from their ATMAs and are not mixed with impure thoughts like selfishness, jealousy, ego, etc.
2. Pure thoughts and love for all keep one healthy and free from diseases. That is why Saints are healthy and free from diseases.
3. The space is full of thoughts which enter our minds even without our being aware of them.
4. When we look at negative aspects of another person, those negative things enter us and if we keep on looking at them again and again we ourselves acquire those negative characteristics.
5. Nothing except love for God can fully satisfy us.
6. Discussing our own good deeds destroys their positive fruits.
7. Negative income and flesh eating – in both cases the ‘Buddhi’ becomes negative and unable to acquire positive things.
